In the seventeenth century taste for Asian objects – and especially Japanese lacquers – stirs the lust of rich aristocrats. In the eighteenth century, this taste for a fantasized Asia reached its peak while trade with Japan became almost impossible since 1639. China becomes the first exporter of lacquers and takes advantage of this monopoly to sell at exorbitant prices its artistic productions. Only the most fortunate sponsors can then order precious encrusted furniture, such as the secretary we present here.
