Oil on canvas by Breton painter Antoine Guillemet, attached to the Barbizon school and close to the Impressionists. This pupil of Corot and Daubigny frequented the greatest artists of his time. Manet even painted him alongside Berthe Morisot in his famous painting “Le Balcon”. He was a close friend of Monet and Cézane and helped the two artists in their careers. This great friend of Emile Zola had, like the writer, a strong fondness for naturalism and even inspired Zola to play his character of Gagnière in L’Œuvre, the fourteenth volume of the Les Rougon-Macquart series. Guy de Maupassant even dedicated his new Le Baptême to him in January 1884.
This painter much appreciated by connoisseurs and much sought after for his works depicting the Cotentin, France. Moreover, several of his paintings are kept in private collections or exhibited in French museums such as the Fine Arts museum of Caen, the castle museum of Dieppe, the fisheries museum of Fécamp or the Art museum and Archeology of Périgord in Périgueux.
